Chinese silver medalist says he's sorry

What's hot on Weibo (July 30)

China's title favorite Wu Jingbiao has delivered an emotional apology after winning a silver medal in the men's 56kg weightlifting competition at the London Olympics on Sunday.

"I'm sorry for my homeland, the Chinese weightlifting team and everyone who cares about me. I'm really sorry," Wu sobbed.

North Korea's Yun Chol Om won the gold with a combined 293 kg total, 4 kilos more than Wu's result. Wu said that he was annoyed that he didn't perform as well as he would have liked during the game. "I hope I can get another chance in 4 years," he said.

Wild card holder makes splash in rowing

A Nigerien wild card holder, Hamadou Djibo Issaka turned out to be another focus in rowing on July, 29.

Only 100 seconds behind the heat winner, Issaka charged across the finish line at Eton Dorney- just three months after he took up rowing. He also drew one of the biggest rounds of applause of the day.

The 35 year-old rower received a wild card from the IOC Tripartite Commission, which allows each National Olympic Committee to enter up to five athletes for the Summer Games.

"There were so many people encouraging me," said Issaka, "I was happy to finish under their applause. Really, I'm happy for the whole country."

    Oldest table tennis player shines

Former Chinese leading table tennis player He Zhiwen, now representing Spain, defeated Wang Zengyi representing Poland in the second round with a narrow victory of 4 to 3 on July 29. At 50 years old, He has become the oldest ever table tennis player competing in the games, while his peers including Cai Zhenhua and Jan-Ove Waldner have long retired.

Nearly 20 years ago, He was in China's national table tennis team and won a bronze in men's doubles in the World Table Tennis Championships in 1985. However, it remained a great pity that he had never been able to take part in the Olympic Games representing China.

Later in 1989, He migrated to Spain and gradually qualified for the Olympics. However, as the top Spanish player, He poses threat to China along with other former Chinese players who are representing other countries, like Li Jiawei on the Singapore team.
