The Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) Forum was held in Karamay, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, from May 10 to 11.

The forum brings together government officials, university representatives, and related experts from 14 countries to discuss ways of building the CCUS industry to facilitate a low-carbon economy.

The annual meeting was hosted by the Standardization Administration of China and the ISO/TC265 CCS Technology Committee, the leading professional committee in the CCUS industry.

CCUS encompasses methods and technologies to remove carbon dioxide from flue gas and the atmosphere, to recycle carbon dioxide for utilization and to determine safe and permanent storage options.

Advanced research projects, including the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC)’s project for promoting efficient carbon recovery, were introduced and discussed during the forum.

Foreign experts gave reports on advanced global carbon capture technologies and oil recovery technologies in the USA. Representatives also discussed development strategies for the CCUS industry in western China.

Shen Pingping, professor at CNPC’s Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration & Development, said that Xinjiang has the most abundant coal reserves across the country and there is huge potential development space for the local coal industry.

Shen added that he hopes Xinjiang can seize the opportunities provided by the Belt and Road to accelerate the development of the CCUS industry.
