Facing new challenges and opportunities, sub-national level communication and cooperation are crucial to China-US ties, according to China's new consul general in New York.

Huang Ping arrived at JFK International Airport on Thursday, announcing that the Chinese Consulate General in New York will continue to promote relations in its consular district.

"The 10 states in the northeastern US that are covered by the Consul General of China in New York have solid foundations of state-level communication and cooperation with China," Huang said at a welcoming reception at the airport.

"I feel a big responsibility to continue promoting the people-to-people exchange and deepening the communication and cooperation between the two nations, especially as China-US relations are at a crucial time facing many challenges and opportunities," Huang said.

Huang also said that he hoped that Chinese President Xi Jinping would have successful talks with US President Donald Trump at the G20 summit in Argentina at the end of the month.

The seasoned diplomat said the consulate will continue to serve overseas Chinese with timely services and strong support.

He also encouraged the efforts made by both Chinese and American Chinese in facilitating cooperation and exchange between China and the US.

Huang was warmly received by overseas Chinese community leaders, with more than 20 representatives from local communities greeting him at the airport.

"I'm very excited to welcome the new consul general and his arrival brings new hope to us," said Liang Guanjun, chairman of the United Chinese Association of the Eastern US, who came to the airport to welcome the new consul general.

"Our overseas Chinese communities are willing to work together with the Chinese consulate general and continue our efforts to promote China-US relations and cultural exchanges," Liang added.

Born in 1963, Huang has broad experience in international affairs and multilateral diplomacy.

He began his career working for the Department of Treaty and Law of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the early 1980s.

Huang served as the consul general of China's consulate in Chicago from 2006 to 2010. He was then appointed director general of consular affairs at the Chinese Foreign Ministry from 2010 to 2015.

Prior to his appointment to the US, he served three years as China's ambassador to Zimbabwe.
