The drama tells the story of Jifa, son of Xiqi Jichang, who took the place of his eldest brother Boyikao in the late Shang Dynasty (c.16th century-11th century BC) as a hostage in the capital. He helped all parties to crusade against the tyrannical King Zhou and was finally deemed a saint.
