Starbucks China is adding smaller stores in busy business areas to enhance its carryout and delivery services, as well as raise efficiency of its in-store dining at neighboring retail stores.

The world-leading coffee chain opened the country's first Starbucks Now location on July 12 in Beijing's financial district. The move meant to reduce waiting times at Starbuck's big retail stores during peak hours and to meet demand from consumers for quicker delivery.

The new store — which boasts an express retail format — keeps the big store's café environment, streamlines mobile order-and-pay service and allows customers and delivery drivers to conveniently snag beverages and food.

Leo Tsoi, chief operating officer and president for Starbucks China Retail, said: "This new retail format and design approach provides us with a platform to offer customers a fast and convenient retail experience to suit their on-the-go lifestyle."

The company plans to expand the new format in the future across high-traffic areas, including business and transportation hubs as well as new cities in China.

The store is smaller than conventional Starbucks locations and equipped with baristas to assist with ordering or order pickup. Limited seating is also available for customers.

Delivery riders will also find it quicker and easier to pick up their orders. All orders will be placed a safe and secure in-wall system with a designated pickup portal associated with each order.
