Open-air markets decline amid development shift

    Advice for visitors

    Before heading to the Daliushu Ghost Market in Beijing, these tips could prove useful.

    Location:

    You are unlikely to find an accurate address for the venue if you merely search "ghost market" with the map app on your phone. Try setting the destination as "Exit B at the Nanlouzizhuang subway station on Line 7", and then follow the crowds to the market gate.

    If you decide to drive there, be prepared to take plenty of time to find a parking spot.

    You can also take a cab and tell the driver that you want to visit the ghost market. The driver will not only take you there, but may also offer some advice as well as stories about the site.

    Operating hours:

    No set hours, but the market usually trades from about 9 pm on Tuesday until 3 or 4 am next day.

    You could start your trip on a Tuesday at about 10 pm, when the market is already likely to be crowded. If you want to hunt for antiques, be sure to arrive as early as 9 pm.

    What to take:

    Visiting an open-air market late at night is unlike a typical shopping experience, so be prepared to bring the following items:

    · A flashlight. The level of lighting provided by stall owners is bright enough for you to have a quick look at what is on offer, but insufficient to check the items in detail, especially when you are searching for jade.

    · A bag. You should carry a backpack or other type of large bag, as the vendors do not supply plastic ones for purchases.

    Some rules:

    · Although there are no clear regulations, the market has its own customs, established over the years.

    · There are no refunds. Unlike in a shopping mall, you will not be able to return an item and ask for your money back at this market. So think twice before making a decision.

    · Bargaining is allowed. It is unwise to buy an item for the price being asked by the vendor. But again, this is not a shopping mall where everything is clearly labeled, so feel free to bargain.

    · Do not ask the price when someone else is looking at an item. Even if you really like it and decide to buy it, whatever the cost, wait until they put it back.

    · Take care of your belongings. At peak hours, the market will be packed with thousands of people, so be on the alert at all times.
