Vice-Foreign Minister Xie Feng on Tuesday urged the United States to abide by bilateral agreements and international resolutions regarding the one-China principle, and correct its wrong practices on Taiwan affairs.

Xie made the comments at a press briefing after the virtual meeting between President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Joe Biden.

In their meeting, Xi said the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques are the political foundation for the bilateral relationship. Biden also stated Washington remains committed to the one-China policy.

The Taiwan question has always been the most vital and sensitive issue in Sino-US ties, a topic brought up every time in discussions between the heads of the two states, Xie said.

Taiwan is a part of China, the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing China and the country's reunification is the common aspiration of all Chinese people, Xie said.

The one-China principle is embodied in the three China-US joint communiques and UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and other official international documents, which should not be falsified, distorted or denied, Xie said.

The Chinese people are strongly dissatisfied with the recent erroneous remarks and practices by the US on the Taiwan question as well as its attempts to confuse the one-China policy, Xie noted.

The US should take practical action to win the trust of the Chinese people and the international community, and China is willing to show greatest sincerity and make utmost efforts to strive for peaceful reunification, he said.

Meanwhile, he added, the country will take decisive measures if "Taiwan independence" separatist forces take provocative moves to press ahead or even cross the red line.

There is no room for China to compromise on issues concerning national sovereignty and territorial integrity, he said.
