Hong Kong Arts Festival is all set to deliver a high-voltage 50th anniversary program where the marriage of art and tech will be much in evidence. Rebecca Lo plugs in to find out more.
Audiovisual bonanza
Da Yan created an entire ecosystem for pianist Yu Xiangjun and Nirvana, a recital that marries visuals and acoustics with a live performance utilizing technological enhancement. "There will be sonic-driven lighting, a matrix of LED screens arranged specifically for the piano structure, two live cameras, real time computer-generated motion graphics, videos, and electro-acoustic music driven by Xiangjun's live performance," says Da, new media art director for Nirvana.
The program presents a smorgasbord of arrangements including Stravinsky's Rite of Spring for four hands, with Yu playing both parts. Others include Xu Zhibo's Vibration of the Heavens and Qin Yi's Fragmented Cloud. "We use a Steinway Spirio | r piano, which is equipped with one of the most cutting-edge sensor systems," Da notes. "Through creative coding, we created a system that enables Xiangjun to perform a real-time four-handed Rite of Spring with herself across time and space in both audio and visual form."
