Art is a form of communication and painting making it an important way to record and illustrate events over time. Artists in China have used different methods to show their appreciation for workers on the front line of the fight against COVID-19.

In September, China Daily's Times' Palette Studio signed a memorandum of understanding with the China Academy of Art, the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts and the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts to jointly build a platform to introduce Chinese artworks to a wider audience.

Presenting work from the six academies and institutes, this page demonstrates the help frontline workers provided in saving lives and controlling the spread of the virus.

The oil painting, by Zhang Zhijian, Liu Haiyang, Li Zhuo, Zhang Jian, Li Taoran and Gao Ming from the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, depicts 47 characters, including those representing delivery riders, health workers and police, as well as others whose tireless efforts helped tackle the pandemic.

This woodblock print by Xu Yuxiao from the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts honors the initial group of 137 medical workers from Shaanxi province who arrived in Wuhan, Hubei province, to assist with disease control in early 2020.

Students and teachers from the China Academy of Art carved woodblock print portraits, full of emotion, of frontline workers.

Using a unique screen-printing technique, Zhang Lian from the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts recreated a scene when the People's Liberation Army were dispatched to Wuhan to help the city tackle COVID-19 infections in early 2020.

The sculpture, created by Li Xun from the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, features a medical worker exhausted after a shift.

By using triptych, Pang Maokun from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute captures medics grabbing a few moments of precious rest during the fight against COVID-19.
