    Stabilizing electricity ancillary services market highlighted at two sessions

    To further facilitate the government's efforts to build a new type of power system, methods to stabilize the power electricity ancillary services market were highlighted during the second session of the 14th National People's Congress.

    As the government is working on a new type of power system with a gradual increase in the proportion of clean energy to further consolidate renewable energy's role in the country's energy mix, it is necessary to accelerate the development of the electricity spot market, said Li Yuhua, a deputy to the 14th National People's Congress from Ningxia Hui autonomous region.

    To ensure existing power supply capabilities are not compromised, Li suggests continuing efforts in areas such as energy storage, virtual power plants, and interruptible loads, all of which are crucial for peak services.

    The primary characteristic of the new power system lies in its reliance on renewable energy sources. In the case of Ningxia, abundant in coal but insufficient in hydro power and natural gas, similar to many provinces nationwide, the region serves as a national comprehensive demonstration area for new energy, he said.

    Large-scale development of new energy in Ningxia is seen as a replicable model for advancing the construction of the new power system, said Li.

    It is projected that by 2024, Ningxia's new energy installed capacity will exceed 46 million kilowatts, constituting 60 percent of the total capacity, with a power generation share exceeding 27 percent.

    Considering the limited diversity of grid regulation resources, regulation resources, including energy storage and intensive peak regulation of thermal power, should play a crucial role in ensuring power supply reliability and facilitating the integration of new energy sources, he said.
