In a significant step towards decarbonizing its transportation sector, CHN Energy Guohua Energy Investment Co Ltd has recently delivered a shipment of high-purity green hydrogen from its plant in Hebei province to a Sinopec refueling station in Beijing, powering the city's hydrogen fuel cell buses and underscoring the nation's commitment to a sustainable energy future.

The development of renewable hydrogen, often termed green hydrogen, is considered a crucial component of China's strategy to achieve its dual carbon goals of peaking emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

Green hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, resulting in virtually zero greenhouse gas emissions during its production. This contrasts with grey hydrogen, which is produced from fossil fuels, and blue hydrogen, where carbon emissions from fossil fuel-based production are captured and stored.

The collaboration between CHN Energy Guohua Energy Investment and Sinopec, Asia's largest refiner, signifies a strengthening of the green hydrogen supply chain within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei economic zone, it said.

CHN Energy Guohua Energy Investment's Hebei branch will supply Sinopec's Beijing Petroleum with hydrogen sufficient to fuel approximately 88 hydrogen fuel cell buses daily. This is estimated to allow the buses to travel a cumulative distance of around 17,600 kilometers per day, resulting in a carbon emission reduction of 14.08 metric tons.

This move is expected to contribute to the optimization of Beijing's energy consumption structure by increasing the use of cleaner alternatives in its public transportation system. The successful delivery and utilization of green hydrogen in Beijing underscores the growing momentum behind hydrogen energy as a viable solution for decarbonizing various sectors in China.
