    Nestled in the lush hills of Fujian province in southeast China, Kuliang is home to a cluster of remarkable trees whose name resonates with emotion—the Taiwan Acacia. Known in Chinese as Xiangsi, meaning "longing", these trees are more than just a part of the landscape—they carry a quiet symbolism that speaks to deep and enduring emotions.

    A different kind of longing

    In Chinese tradition, the red bean is a classic emblem of longing. But here in Kuliang, the Taiwan Acacia offers a golden alternative. Each May, these hardy trees burst into bloom, cloaking the mountains in waves of golden-yellow blossoms. Nearby, the delicate white Tung flowers—known as "May Snow"—add to the visual symphony, turning the landscape into a vibrant celebration of early summer.

    Belonging to the legume family and the "Acacia" genus, the Taiwan Acacia boasts a full, upright canopy adorned with fluffy, fragrant flower clusters. Small, round, and golden, these blooms charm by both their beauty and meaning.

    A treasure tree

    Beyond its striking appearance, the Taiwan Acacia is celebrated for its strength and versatility. Thriving in tough environments, it plays a key role in afforestation, soil and water conservation, and windbreak forest construction. Every part of the tree serves a purpose:

    Flowers for fragrance production;

    Bark for tannin extraction;

    Leaves as animal fodder;

    Young shoots in traditional medicine.

    For its many uses and remarkable resilience, the Taiwan Acacia is truly a "treasure tree".

    A symbol of shared memory

    In southern Fujian, the Acacia tree also carries deep emotional weight. A beloved folk song sings of its significance, embodying the connection and longing across the Taiwan Strait.

    Growing on both shores, the Taiwan Acacia takes root in shared soil and shared memory. Its golden blossoms seem to echo across the waters, like little suns or golden moons among the branches, quietly whispering stories of kinship, history, and unbroken ties.

    For the best views, use a drone to capture the sweeping golden canopy from above. Please park in designated areas and avoid stopping randomly along the mountain road for your safety and that of others.

    Come to Kuliang this May and immerse yourself in a golden sea of Acacia blossoms.
