Ningbo boosts NEV exports with new sea-land trade corridor to Middle East

The UGR Zakher, a new mega car carrier, departed from Meixi Ro-Ro Terminal at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, carrying over 3,800 Chinese vehicles bound for the UAE, Egypt, and Italy on July 3.

The voyage marked the launch of a new sea-land intermodal route between Zhejiang and the UAE — highlighting a major achievement in port cooperation between Zhejiang Seaport Group and AD Ports Group.

To ensure a smooth journey, Ningbo Customs adopted smart logistics oversight, enabling paperless ship clearance, automated approvals, and real-time monitoring of berthing and loading. The vessel also benefited from streamlined bonded fuel supply and enhanced health inspections.

UGR Zakher, operated by United Global Ro-Ro (UGR), features 12 decks and more than 7,000 vehicle spaces. It now serves routes linking Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean, offering enhanced efficiency and flexibility for automotive transport.

The collaboration was launched at the 2025 Maritime Silk Road Port Cooperation Forum in May, where both groups committed to a joint model focused on ro-ro logistics and green energy technologies.

From January to May, Ningbo's vehicle exports to the Middle East reached 64,000 units — 2.4 times higher year-on-year. Exports to the UAE alone rose to 42,000 vehicles. Ningbo Customs continues to refine its smart port model, supporting high-quality growth in China's foreign trade.
