A newly released film uses AI to depict Su Shi witnessing how Hainan has evolved into a bustling free trade port. The famed 11th-century Chinese poet was once exiled to the island province.

The project merges advanced AI with creative storytelling to connect ancient Chinese culture with modern innovation. "We aimed to show how tradition and technology can spark meaningful dialogue," said producer Niu Xiaomin.

The production team utilized Chinese-developed AI tools to achieve hyper-realistic results. Custom AI models preserved intricate details in clothing, facial features, and settings, while proprietary algorithms enhanced visuals to near-cinematic quality. An integrated AI system streamlined production from scripting to final edits.

Unlike typical historical reconstructions, the film blends AI-generated realism with narrative creativity. "This isn't just a restoration - it's a character-driven reimagining," said associate producer Chen Shuhuan.

As the digital Su Shi explores modern Hainan, his ancient words resonate anew: "I have no regrets about my nine deaths in the southern wilds, for this extraordinary journey has crowned my life."

When Su Shi was banished to Hainan in 1097, the tropical island was a remote imperial outpost. Despite harsh conditions, he founded schools, advanced farming methods, and wrote some of his most celebrated poetry.

Today, Hainan is a key player in China's economic growth, with visa-free entry for travelers from 85 countries and the Hainan Free Trade Port, which is set to launch an island-wide independent customs operation on Dec 18. The Hainan International Commercial Aerospace Launch Center in Wenchang owes its success in part to the region's zero-tariff policy on production equipment imports.

The province is also home to the national seed breeding zone project in Sanya, dubbed "Nanfan Agricultural Silicon Valley". The zone produces over 70 percent of China's new crop varieties.

The film was produced by Hainan International Media Center and released last week.
