110 ticket scalpers questioned
By Zhu Zhe (China Daily)
Updated: 2008-08-16 09:38 Beijing police yesterday rounded up 110 foreign and Chinese Olympic ticket scalpers in a series of raids across the city. About 340 tickets were confiscated and all of the suspects were taken to police stations for questioning, Wang Wenjie, a senior police officer with the city's public security bureau, told China Daily last night. Some of the alleged scalpers are from overseas, he said, but declined to give numbers. According to a press release from the bureau, one foreigner is accused of selling 24 tickets near the Water Cube for up to 10 times their face value. Most of the scalpers were arrested near the Wukesong Indoor Basketball Stadium and Beitucheng subway station, which is just a mile from the Olympic Green, police said. Under Chinese law, anyone caught scalping tickets can be detained for up to 15 days. Police will put up posters in both Chinese and English at key areas warning people of the serious consequences of ticket scalping, Wang said. (For more biz stories, please visit Industries)
