Li visits senior citizens in HK

    HONG KONG - Chinese Vice-Premier Li Keqiang dropped in on some senior citizens at the Wong Cho Tong District Elderly Community Centre in Ho Man Tin Tuesday afternoon during his visit to Hong Kong Administrative Region.

    He shook hands with the residents, stopping to talk to some, including some who were getting physio-therapy.

    Li also came bearing gifts, including a stand-up wheelchair and a 55-inch flat-screen LCD television. Resident at the centre described Li's manner as "amiable," some observing that he appeared happy at seeing the elderly folks happy.

    The vice-premier was accompanied on the visit by Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, Secretary for Labour and Welfare Department.

    Later, Li, accompanied by Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen and Eva Cheng Yu-wah, Secretary for Transport and Housing and chairman of the Housing Authority, visited the Hong Kong Housing Authority Exhibition Centre, showcasing the history and policy of public housing in the region.

    Vice-Premier of the State Council Li Keqiang also visited residents of Ping Tin Estate, a public housing estate at Lam Tin, Kowloon. He shook hands with elders living there upon arrival.

    Later, Li went to a private housing estate nearby to meet a middle-class family.

    Li was accompanied by the Director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the State Council Wang Guangya and the Director of the Liaison Office of The Central People's Government in the HKSAR Peng Qinghua.

    Affordable housing has remained one of Li's principal focuses in addition to reform of the healthcare system reform and food safety.

    "One country, two systems" the policy introduced by Deng Xiao ping, the late leader, has proven success and continues to show great vitality, the Vice-Premier of the State Council Li Keqiang told Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive Donald Tsang on Tuesday afternoon.

    Li noted that Hong Kong has maintained its prosperity and stability and has been among the most active economies in the world. In its overall development, Hong Kong continues to prosper, he said, adding he is confident that Hong Kong's future will be better still, despite the economic challenges ahead.

    Li added, the Central government attaches great importance to Hong Kong.
