Translucent roof tiles, wooden steps, animated screens ... Hong Kong as the host city of the ongoing ITU (International Telecommunication Union) Telecom World 2006, shows a smartly designed exhibiting platform -- Hong Kong, China Pavilion.

Being the largest platform of the event, Hong Kong, China Pavilion, which brings traditional Chinese architecture and technology together, occupies an area of about 2,500 square feet. Some 10,000 tiles were used for the rooftop and the links amongst individual tiles via cables can be compared to communication links bringing people close to each other.

The multiple inscriptions of the Chinese character meaning "blessings" in its different forms on each piece of tile presents blessings and wishes of good fortune for exchanges under this roof.

Under the roof, there stood ten main pillars to depict the idea of completeness and perfection in Chinese culture as the word "ten" relates to perfect, while the white and transparent framework allows variation in scenes and experiences, generating endless room for imagination and interaction with the minds of the visitors.

According to the host city, the whole structure of the Pavilionas well as the activities held there reflects the special qualities and position of Hong Kong as Host -- Hong Kong's cultural roots, disposition for innovation, and advancement in technological development enable the city to provide an ideal platform for international exchange.

The Pavilion consisted of three parts: the main hall is occupied by about 30 small and medium local enterprises, while the other two halls house the booths of famous local telecommunication organizations and local government. A total of 74 Hong Kong exhibitors have joined this year's ITU Telecom World, breaking the record of past years.

Local exhibitors mainly feature their most innovative and latest wireless technology, computer software and hardware, and telecommunication devices, so as to attract investment outside thecity and to exploit larger market.

ITU Telecom World 2006 Hong Kong Pavilion Event Executive Yuen Kam Tim told the reporter on Wednesday that Hong Kong exhibitors cherish every chance to promote their products which might not be as eye catching as those of world renowned brands though.

"The business facilitating program organized by the Pavilion has been very popular and most of the time we have to arrange additional seats to satisfy the participants' needs," said Yuen.

Yuen said that one of the characteristics of the Pavilion is that more than ten departments of the governments are revealing the technology they used which are in fact closely linked to our daily life. Some examples include application of mobile technology in schools, information technology for the enhancement of slope safety and digital weather information.

Apart from exhibiting areas, the Pavilion also include a large conference center, several small meeting rooms and recess areas. Visitors can also taste traditional Chinese tea in which they can appreciate Chinese culture.
