Highlights of Wen's activities in Vietnam

HANOI - The following are highlights of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's activities in Vietnam on Saturday.

Addressing the Fifth East Asia Summit, Wen said that the summit has boosted the mutual understandings among all the member states and promoted peace, stability and development in the region since its establishment five years ago.

While centrality of ASEAN must be respected in the process of East Asia integration, efforts are also needed to enable the existing mechanism to ?play their role, such as the summit between China and ASEAN (10+1), the summit between ASEAN, China, Japan and South Korea (10+3) and the summit of China, Japan and South Korea, said Premier Wen.

He said China welcomes the participation of Russia and the United States in the East Asia Summit, expressing the hope that the two countries would play a constructive role.

Wen also highlighted that China has steadfast determination, explicit policy and positive measures to develop a relationship based on?good-neighborliness and mutual benefits.

He said he believes with the joint efforts by all the partners, cooperation in the East Asia would make constant progress and reach a higher level.

Wen met with Nong Duc Manh, general-secretary of the Central Committee of the Vietnamese Communist Party, on Saturday morning to exchange views on bilateral ties and issues of common concern.

Wen said Vietnam has done tremendous work for the meetings and shouldered great responsibility.

China is willing to maintain high-level exchange with Vietnam, Wen said, adding the two countries should share their experience in development and learn from each other.

Wen said both countries has acquired precious experience from the successful settlement of their difference on the land boarder and the Beibu Gulf. Hence for their disputes on the South China Sea, still bilateral negotiation and consultation should be the right way for a solution.

Wen and his Australian counterpart Julia Gillard on Saturday promised concerted efforts to further promote the development of relations between their two countries.

During their meeting, Wen said that Australia is a major power in the Asia-Pacific region and an important partner to China, and that closer and efficient bilateral ties are in the fundamental interests of the two countries and are conducive to regional peace and prosperity.

He called for efforts to maintain and boost cooperation in the sectors of energy and resources and expand cooperation in clean energy, energy conservation and environment protection in a bid to promote sustainable development.

Wen also said the two sides should continue to push forward free trade agreement talks, expand exchanges in culture, education, tourism and press in order to enhance mutual understanding. The two countries should also strengthen communication and coordination within the framework of the United Nations and the Group of 20 (G20).

The Chinese premier left Vietnam for home on Saturday afternoon after attending a series of summits between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its partners, including the 13th summit between ASEAN and China (10+1), the 13th summit between ASEAN and China, Japan and the South Korea (10+3), the 5th East Asia summit.

During his three-day stay in Hanoi, he also met with leaders of Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, India, Singapore and Australia, on the sidelines of the summits.
