    Overview

Beijing Normal University is a renowned institution of higher learning that emphasizes teacher training and basic learning in the arts and sciences, under the Ministry of Education’s stewardship. It was originally the Normal College of Imperial University of Peking, founded in 1902. In 1908, its name was changed to the Advanced Normal College of Imperial University and it became an independent entity. In 1912, the name was again changed to Beijing Advanced Normal School, then, in 1923, it acquired its current name and was the first normal university ever in China. In 1931, it absorbed Peking Women’s Normal University and, in 1952, Fu Jen Catholic University.

For more than a century, Beijing Normal shared the fate of the Chinese and their struggle to gain independence, freedom, and democracy, and to prosper and it has played a significant role in patriotic movements such as the May 4th Movement (1919) and the December 9th Movement (1935). Over the years, it has been home to a large number of intellectuals and scholars, who have promoted culture and stimulated the zeal for education. Among these are Li Dazhao, Lu Xun, Liang Qichao, Qian Xuantong, Wu Chengren, Li Jinxi, Chen Yuan, Fan Wenlan, Hou Wailu, Bai Shouyi, Zhong Jingwen, Qi Gong, Hu Xiansu, Wang Kunren, and Zhou Tingru. It joined the first "211" development project under the 9th Five-year Plan. In 2002, for the school’s centennial celebration, the Education Ministry and Beijing municipal government pointed to the collaboration with Beijing Normal. And Beijing listed Beijing Normal as one of the institutions it wanted to develop into a world-class university. Under the 10th Five-year Plan, the school was added to the country’s "985" construction project.
