The second World Internet Conference (WIC), which concluded in Wuzhen, Zhejiang province on Dec 18, was a successful platform for participants to reach consensus on cyberspace governance and showcased state-of-the-art high-tech products, said Ren Xianliang, vice-minister of the Cyberspace Administration of China.

President Xi Jinping attended the conference on Dec 16. He called for building a cyber-community of common destiny and put forward the principles of respecting cyber sovereignty, safeguarding cyber security, encouraging cyber opening up and building a constructive cyber order as the world governs the Internet. Participants largely agreed on his comments and shared their understanding of issues related to the development of the Internet industry, Ren said at a press conference after the conclusion of the WIC.

More than 2,000 guests from 120 countries and regions were present at the conference, including about 50 ministerial-level officials, more than 20 heads of important international organizations and more than 600 industrial leaders and experts, which indicates the high profile of the conference, Ren said.

Ren added that ten sub-forums were held during the conference, which covered 22 topics, such as online cultural communication, Internet innovation, digital economy cooperation, Internet technical standards, and interconnectivity.

Participants put forward many new ideas on China's Internet development, trends of global Internet development, and the building of a cyber-community of common destiny. "They also thought highly of China's contribution to global Internet governance through the hosting of the conference," said Ren. "They said China's holding of the conference was necessary to push development of the Internet globally and solve the problems that urgently need to be solved in the field of the Internet and cyberspace."

The Light of the Internet exhibition, which was held on the sidelines of the conference, attracted about 260 enterprises from Asia-Pacific regions, the US, Europe and Latin America. The exhibition showcased the potential and value of the frontier technologies and innovative projects of China's Internet-related industries.

More than 730 journalists from 110 media outlets of 14 countries and regions reported the conference, Ren said.

Yuan Jiajun, vice-governor of Zhejiang, introduced the province's achievements in developing the Internet industry and digital economy.

"Zhejiang will take advantage of the WIC to accelerate innovative development of the Internet industry and the information-based economy in our province," he said at the press conference.

Zhejiang will continue to support development of big data industry and intelligent manufacturing, he said.

By the end of 2014, the province had 24,000 industrial robots in use, accounting for 15 percent of the national total; this year, another 10,000 robots will be added and by 2020 there will be 55,000 new robots added annually to various manufacturing sectors, he predicted.
