    Ink paintings on show

About 30 ink paintings by Sun Yunsheng (1918-2000) are on show at Chun Art Museum. Sun was born in Beijing and studied traditional Chinese ink art in the institute of ancient art at the Palace Museum. He became a formal disciple of Chang Dai-chien in 1936 and later moved to Brazil with the master.

10 am-5 pm, daily except for Mondays, until July 16. Chun Art Museum, 655 Fuzhou Lu (Road), Huangpu district, Shanghai. 021-6333-0181.

    Artist's embrace of the lotus

Zhou Sicong (1939-96) is known for her realistic paintings, such as People and Premier Zhou and Mineworkers. An exhibition at Beijing Fine Art Academy's gallery, however, offers viewers a rare chance to appreciate her incredible lotus paintings. Zhou suffered from arthritis in the 1980s, which caused deformity in her hands and feet. Unable to concentrate on meticulous brushwork, she had to shift to a more abstract style, which led to many lotus-themed creations. She departed from the traditional approach and imported into the paintings an easy-going attitude toward life she embraced after being tortured by illness.

9 am-5 pm, until July 16. Art museum of Beijing Fine Art Academy, Courtyard 12, Chaoyang Gongyuan Nan Lu (Road), Beijing. 010-6502-5171.

The Black Light Theater from the Czech Republic will present its new project The Launderette. The story begins on a summer day when a young woman washes dirty clothes and hangs them on a line. She then knits a long stocking from a ball of wool. Her lover calls her, and she runs after him when suddenly the clothes on the line come alive.

7:15 pm, July 17. Shanghai Oriental Art Center, 425 Dingxiang Lu (Road), Pudong New Area, Shanghai. 021-6854-1234.
