The Walt Disney Company's Captain America: Civil War debuted to top the North America box office this weekend, making the studio become the one with biggest tickets revenue in the year of 2016.

Captain America: Civil War, which began to be shown at the cinemas in the United States and Canada Friday, was projected to fetch $181.8 million in tickets revenue over the weekend, according to comScore.

The blockbuster superhero sequel, starring Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., received "A" from first-night moviegoers on CinemaScore and the critics gave it a strong 91 percent of positive rate. The audience breakdown for Captain America: Civil War skewed toward male moviegoers who made up 59 percent of the total audience and toward moviegoers over the age of 25. Family audience accounted for 20 percent of the film's overall audience.

Analyst noted that Captain America: Civil War posted the biggest opening of 2016 thus far, officially starting the summer season of the year. The movie comes from Disney's Marvel brand and is the tenth Marvel picture film to open with more than $100 million in opening weekend sales.

Internationally, Captain America: Civil War raked in up to $678 million in total earnings after it was launched overseas last weekend, with an estimated $220 million from overseas markets for this three-day weekend.

The live action remake of The Jungle Book dropped to the second place by the amount of tickets revenue, with $21.9 million this weekend, falling a sizable 50 percent from last weekend. The film grossed $285 million in North America over the last 24 days. The movie has taken in $776.2 million in total tickets earnings globally.

The Jungle Book, which was ranked the first in the prior three weekends, together with Zootopia, which was placed the seventh this week, and the Captain America: Civil War -- all three movies from Disney -- grossed $794 million domestically in the first five months of the year.

"All of this contributes to Disney's stranglehold on the 2016 box office where it became the fastest studio to cross $1 billion. On top of that, Disney has also become the fastest studio to reach $2 billion internationally and $3 billion globally, surpassing the previous industry records set last year in June," said the Box Office Mojo, an online box office tracker.

Mother's Day was in the third place with $9 million in expected sales by the end of this Mother's Day, which fell on Sunday.

The Huntsman: Winter's War was ranked the fourth with $3.6 million in tickets earnings, while Keanu came the fifth with $3 million in expected ticket sales by the close of business on Sunday night.

Rounding out the rest of the top 10 movies this weekend were Barbershop: The Next Cut ($2.7 million), Zootopia ($2.7 million), The Boss ($1.8 million), Ratchet An Clank ($1.5 million) and Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice ($1 million).
