    ( 2003-07-20 11:20) (Xinhua)

Tropical storm "Koni," the eighth this year, hit the center of the South China Sea on Saturday afternoon.

By 5 p.m. Saturday, the eye of the storm was located at 14.6 degrees north latitude and 116.5 degrees east longitude, with gale-force winds near the epicenter, according to the Central Meteorological Station.

It is expected to move further northwestward at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour, gaining intensity as it moves along its path approaching eastern part of south China's Hainan Province and central part of south China's Guangdong Province.

The storm will generate moderate to strong gales over most parts of the South China Sea on Saturday night and Sunday.
