Flooding traps 15 in coal mine
    ( 2003-09-12 16:41) (Xinhua)

Flooding has left 15 miners trapped in a coal mine in Hancheng City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

The accident occurred at Sangshuping Coal Mine Thursday evening, when 22 miners were working below ground, but only seven were rescued.

Yang Xiangfeng, an official with Shaanxi Provincial Administration for supervision of Industrial Safety, who rushed to the scene on Thursday night, said there was little hope for the trapped to survive.

Apart from erecting a pump at the opening of the mine to remove the flood water, rescue workers have also been digging a new passage to divert water to nearby low-lying areas.
