Bank robbery suspect shot dead in central China
    ( 2003-10-13 17:36) (Xinhua)

A suspected bank robber was shot dead Sunday evening on a fishing boat in Tianmen City, Hubei Province, while resisting police arrest.

Xie Xianrong was allegedly responsible for robbing a cash- carrying bank vehicle and killing four people in Qianjiang City, Hubei, on Sept. 29.

Xie allegedly ambushed the vehicle of a Qianjiang bank office around 8 a.m. as it arrived at the bank and the cash being transferred. After shooting at the driver and guards, Xie stole 348,800 yuan (US$42,200) and a pistol from the vehicle.

Three people died at the scene and one died later in hospital.

A police investigation identified Xie as the robber and he was tracked to the boat where he was shot in a gunfight.

Xie also stole about 20,000 yuan (US$2,420 US) from a middle school in Jingzhou City, Hubei, on Sept. 10, 2002, leaving one person dead and two injured.

Xie escaped a police hunt on Aug. 5, 2003, after shooting and injuring a police officer in Jingmen City, Hubei.
