China to host competition for young vocalists
    ( 2003-10-13 21:20) (Xinhua)

More than 170 young Chinese vocalists will have the chance to show their talent at the fourth competition for young vocalists and new compositions, which is to open on Oct. 18 in Beijing Tianqiao Theater.

Yu Ping, vice-chairman of the organizing committee and an official with the Ministry of Culture, said Monday that the competition was intended to encourage young vocalists and promote creations.

He said contestants could be aged 16 to 35, and should perform a new musical piece which had not been published or has been published since June, 2001. The MOC had organized an expert team to judge video and audio tapes from nearly 400 competitors, and had selected 170 for the finals.

Songs performed by competitors covered a wide range of subjects, including China's development of its western regions, the fight against severe acute respiratory syndrome in spring, and environmental protection.

The competition was initiated in 1992.
