Digital-phone maker rings up 41% UK share
    ( 2003-10-15 14:30) (China Daily HK Edition)

Hong Kong-based telecommunications firm Binatone Telecom Group has achieved a 41 per cent market share in the United Kingdom since last year, Chairman Gulu Lalvani told reporters yesterday.

"Binatone is currently the largest manufacturer of digital enhanced cordless telephones (DECT) in the world after Siemens, with six million units sold at the end of March this year," said Lalvani. Binatone has a 15 per cent market share in Europe where the digital and analogue cordless telephone market continues to grow at high speed, with 40 million units sold there annually, said the telecommunications manufacturer.

"We have plans to develop the US market next year, while expansion in the China market is slated for 2005," Lalvani said.

The company also plans to form a joint-venture operation in China with a mainland firm.

He expects the Chinese market to develop gradually, with an initial focus on a more up-market clientele, while long-term growth will be more substantial as China becomes the largest consuming nation in the world.

"Binatone has combined distribution and brand development in Europe with outsourced production based on the Chinese mainland. This business model continues to generate a significant competitive edge," he said.

The company's total sales this year reached US$175 million, while net profit amounted to about US$10 million, according to Lalvani.
