South Korea mum on sending troops to Iraq
    ( 2003-10-17 14:57) (Agencies)

South Korea said Friday it would seek ways to support a U.S.-led United Nations  resolution on Iraq but offered no new word on whether it would send troops to help the U.S.-led coalition in the country.

"We expect this resolution will contribute to early political stabilization and economic rehabilitation in Iraq," said Oh Joon, head of the Foreign Ministry's international organizations bureau.

"Our country, a U.N. member, will explore possible ways to participate in implementing the resolution," he added, without elaborating.

The United States has asked South Korea to send troops to help restore security.

South Korea has not yet decided whether to do so, as the nation remains divided over the issue. Some believe it would boost Seoul's military alliance with Washington, which is vital to South Korea's national security. Others say the U.S. military operations in Iraq were unjustified, and South Korea shouldn't send soldiers.

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun had said his government would make a decision after considering several factors, including public opinion.

The U.N. Security Council unanimously adopted the resolution Thursday, which was seen as a diplomatic victory for Washington after the bitter dispute over the war.
