    Paradorn upset by Van Lottum
    ( 2003-10-23 08:45) (China Daily)

Defending champion Paradorn Srichaphan was upset by unseeded John Van Lottum 7-5, 6-1 Wednesday in the Stockholm Open's first round.

"It's probably the biggest win of the year for me since there was a lot at stake for him in this match," Van Lottum said. "He was the defending champion, he's still trying to qualify for the Masters Cup and he's been playing well during the indoors season."

Paradorn is 11th in the ATP Champions Race; the top eight qualify for the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup next month.

Van Lottum next plays Jonas Bjorkman, who rallied to beat Andreas Vinciguerra 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Also, fifth-seeded Mardy Fish reached the quarterfinals by beating qualifier Julien Benneteau 6-4, 6-4. Wild-card entry Joachim Johansson also reached the last eight, eliminating fourth-seeded Fernando Gonzalez 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Third-seeded Nicolas Massu, coming off a loss to top-ranked Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final of the Madrid Masters, lost 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to Raemon Sluiter in a first-round match.

Jan-Michael Gambill quit with a back injury while trailing Davide Sanguinetti 5-4 in a first-round match.
