    Wine production rises in China
    ( 2003-10-24 09:28) (China Daily)

China produced more than 140,000 tons of wine during the first half of the year, up 5.7 percent from the corresponding period last year.

The figure was released at the 2003 national autumn trade fair on sweets and alcoholic drinks in Shenyang, capital of the northeastern province of Liaoning.

Both the output value and sales of China's wine industry reached about three billion yuan (US$361 million) during the period, up 11.8 percent and 8.3 percent respectively.

The industry reaped 900 million yuan (US$108 million) in pre-tax profits, up 4.7 percent.

The growth in sales could be attributed to rising living standards in China, said experts at the fair, adding that the continuing rise in output would increase competition among producers.
