    Official calls for coordinated development
    ( 2003-10-25 00:25) (Xinhua)

A senior Chinese leader has called for coordinated economic and social development, by further improving the socialist market economy and making great efforts to boost the development of socialist culture.

Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the call on a study tour, between October 20-23, in central China's Henan Province.

During his visit, Li toured Luoyang, Anyang, Jiaozuo and Zhengzhou cities and inspected a number of key projects including the Xiaolangdi Dam Project and the Zhengzhou part of a cross- country natural gas pipeline project. He also visited some communities and poor villages in mountain areas.

In talks with local officials, Li praised the achievements Henan had made in the reform, opening-up and modernization drive.

As a major grain producer, Henan must always focus on agriculture, villages and farmers, Li stressed. Meanwhile, the province should make use of its rich cultural heritage and resources and develop culture-related industries, to fully display the brilliant history and culture of the Chinese Nation, he said.
