    Sri Lanka president declares state of emergency

    Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga declared a state of emergency Wednesday, one day after she threw the country into political turmoil by firing three cabinet ministers and suspending parliament.

    "It has been gazetted," military spokesman Colonel Sumedha Perera told Reuters when asked about the state of emergency.
