Disney's "Finding Nemo" set new record in video sales
    ( 2003-11-06 16:41) (Agencies)

Disney's animated hit "Finding Nemo" set a new record in initial video sales in the United States on Tuesday, breaking the previous record set by "Spider Man."

A record 8 million copies of "Finding Nemo" DVD and VHS were sold in its first day, breaking the previous high of 7 million set last year by "Spider-Man."

The studio shipped 25 million copies but already has ordered more, figuring some stores might run out as early as this weekend, said Bob Chapek, president of Disney home entertainment.

DVDs accounted for about 90 percent of the first-day sales. Chapek said he expected the total sales for "Finding Nemo" could rival the 32 million VHS copies that Disney's "The Lion King" in the 1990s.

"Finding Nemo" has already set a new record as the top-grossing animated movie by earning 339 million dollars domestically.

The computer-animated tale about a father clownfish who takes on a risky undersea voyage to rescue his son was the fifth in the partnership between Disney and Pixar, whose previous hit movies include "Monsters, Inc." and the "Toy Story" flicks.
