    Beijing strives to keep unemployment rate under 2.5%

    The national capital Beijing will work hard to keep the local unemployment rate under 2.5 per cent in 2004, according to the municipal labor and social security bureau.

    Zhang Xinqing, the bureau head, said Beijing would face a toughemployment situation in 2004, with 451,000 people seeking jobs. Ofthe total job seekers, 221,000 would be new graduates from universities and other tertiary institutes.

    Beijing has set a goal to help 180,000 new graduates to find jobs and help 160,000 jobless people to find new jobs this year.

    Beijing reported an unemployment rate of 1.43 per cent last year.
