Experts suggest strengthened human resources cooperation in Northeast Asia
    ( 2001-10-22 09:53) (8)

Countries in Northeast Asia could deepen their cooperation in human resources and make better use of local diversified economy, said experts attending a world seminar held in China.

This suggestion was made during the 10th International Conference on Peace and Development in Northeast Asia held in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province.

Wang Shengjin, a scholar from the Institute of Northeast Asia Studies of the Jilin University, said that a strengthened labor flow within the region was underway.

Labor shortages in Japan, the Republic of Korea and the far east region of Russia have increased.

According to Ivan Bezrukov, an economic expert from Russia, the population of the country will drop 15 million within the next 15 years and Russia is importing labor from other countries as way to overcome the problem.

In northeast China, the geographical center of the Northeast Asia, local annual job demand has hit 2 million which could be a vast human resource for countries like Russia and Japan, said Wang Shengjin.

To solve the problem of labor shortage, Russia and Japan have begun to modify relevant laws on immigration.

Qiu Hong, a research fellow of the Jilin University, said the labor flow in Northeast Asia could never be one-way.

With the pending WTO entry, China also urgently needs to introduce more labor from other countries, especially talented professionals in fields like technical innovation, marketing and capital venture.

As Japan, the Republic of Korea and Russia joined the World Trade Organization long before China, provinces in China have only recently mapped out preferential policies to attract overseas professionals.

To boost the region's labor cooperation, experts called on the region to build up an international labor service center to regulate labor cooperation practice, increase transparency and to better protect laborer's interests.
