    The beautiful and only Beyonce

Beyonce Knowles won five Grammy Awards on Sunday for her debut solo album Dangerously in Love and single Crazy in Love, tying the record for a female artist held by Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys and Norah Jones.

Born in 1981 to a loving family in Houston, Texas, Beyonce showed a gift for music before she could even talk. As a young girl, she would drown out everyone, including the church choir, on Sundays at church. Every weekend, she also took opera classes, in which she was classically trained.

A normal childhood was not in the books for Beyonce. At age 8, she met LaTavia Robertson while auditioning for a girl group and Beyonce’s father and manager later paired the two with LeToya Luckett. In 1992, cousin Kelly Rowland joined the group.

Later, the four beauties called themselves Destiny’s Child. In 1997, No, No, No became their first official single, and they were soon popular as the single went multi-platinum.

After the second album, The Writing’s on the Wall, sold more than 9 million worldwide in 1999, they became one of the best-selling female groups of recent memory.

In 2000, LeToya and LaTavia left the group because of management problems. Michelle Williams joined Destiny’s Child in 2000, the group recorded Survivor, which was a big success.

In 2001 Destiny’s Child won two Grammy awards: Best R&B song (Say My Name) and Best R&B performance by a Duo or Group (Say My Name).

After all this success, the three women decided to try their hands at solo careers. To no one’s surprise, Beyonce has drawn much of the attention with her strong voice. She also starred with Mike Myers in Austin Powers in Goldmember.

Beyonce showed a versatile style with this solo effort, creating the song Baby Boy, Crazy in Love and The Closer I Get To You.

Like her work in Destiny’s Child, Beyonce wrote or co-wrote many of the songs and performed her heart out on award shows to get the word out to a huge audience.

She has emerged as a diva, with catchy videos and songs.

As she prepares for a tour, Beyonce can be seen in ads for L’Oreal and Pepsi, and in the musical The Fighting Temptations. Beyonce has another album coming out in March.

“This is unbelievable. Performing was enough for me. I’m just so honored.”

    — Beyonce said in her acceptance speech at the 46th Grammy Awards.
