Law enacted in Shandong on curb domestic violence

East China's Shandong Province promulgated on Friday a new law to prevent and curb domestic violence, stipulating legal consequences for those who commit domestic violence and placing prevention as the responsibility of the whole society.

According to the law, the first of its kind in Shandong, every organization or individual has the right to report domestic violence cases and those who commit domestic violence will be dealt with by the courts.

Elsewhere in China, similar laws have been enacted in central-south Hunan province, southwestern Sichuan province, and northwest China's Ningxi Hui Autonomous Region.

A recent survey by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences indicates that as many as 30 percent of women in 270 million families in the country were victimized by domestic violence.

Domestic violence was the cause of 28 percent of divorces in Shandong, according to the local Women's Federation.

A survey of female criminals jailed in Shandong shows that 54 percent of crimes committed by women are connected with domestic violence.

So far, shelters for victims of domestic violence, and centers for case reporting have been set up in some cities in Shandong, in a bid to control and check the unlawful practice.
