Olympic venues open to global bids

Beijing Olympic organizers said Tuesday it is looking for tenders for another two Olympic venues -- the National Tennis Centre and the National Field Hockey Centre.

The organizers said the non-governmental tender is open to international bids.

"We promise that it will be an open, fair and transparent bid and we welcome investors from home and abroad," said Yang Jun, vice-head of the managing office of construction on the two venues.

Applicant entry evaluations and sales of related documents started last month. Bid documents will be released on June 15.

The two venues, are to be built in the northwest part of Beijing at the site of the current National Olympic Centre, the main venue for the 1990 Beijing Asian Games. Both bids are expected to attract hot competition due to their prime location, organizers said.

In addition, the local government has vowed to provide subsidiary items to attract applicants.

"This is a hot spot so we are trying to look for a great partner," Yang said.

The winning bidder will be able to manage the two venues and a 220,000 square-metre centre attached to the venues for no more than 30 years after the games. The government has said it may cover part of the relocating cost.

The ten-hectare tennis centre is expected to have 16 tennis courts while the 12-hectare hockey centre will include four arenas. The attached centre will include multiple-function sports and entertainment facilities.

Bidding will close on August 16 and the whole tendering work is expected to finish on September 15.

Construction plans on both venues will also be released soon as the organizers have already picked up eight candidate designs .

An open exhibition on the eight designs will be held later this month at the Beijing International Convention Centre to let the citizens vote for their favourite before a panel chooses the winning piece in June.
