China sets cap on mining of wolfram ore

China has moved to set a ceiling on the annual output of wolfram ore in a bid to protect its resources and sustainable use, an official with the Ministry of Land and Resources said Wednesday.

According to a circular the ministry issued recently to provincial authorities, the output quota of concentrated wolfram ore for this year is set at 52,000 tons, including 200 tons for comprehensive use.

The quota was set according to the country's law on mineral resources, said the official.

The ministry urged provincial authorities to set mining quotas for qualified mining firms according to the quotas given to each province, and conduct regular inspections to ensure the quota system will not be violated.

Regions and mining firms will be punished according to law and face cuts in their quotas for the next year if they are found violating the system, according to the circular.

Under the system, mining firms must report during the first 10 days of every month their output and sales volume for the previous month.
