Dirty food poisons 31 students in south China

Four poisoned students remained in hospital in a mass food poisoning in which 31 students were sickened on Wednesday in a vocational school in Zhanjiang City, south China's Guangdong province.

By Thursday morning 27 students have been discharged from the Central People's Hospital of Zhanjiang, doctors said.

The students of the Zhanjiang's No. 1 Mechanics' School began to report nausea, vomiting, dizziness and diarrhea on early Wednesday morning. They were quickly sent to the hospital.

According to the school authority, students said they had eaten food Tuesday evening in the school's dining hall and small restaurants near the campus.

Zhou Ning, chief doctor of the hospital, said the symptoms indicated that students were poisoned by noxious bacteria from dirty food.

The center for disease control of Zhanjiang and the city's food safety department have taken samples of students' vomit for laboratory test. The initial results agreed with what the doctor said, but officials said the cause was yet to be finalized.
