Wayne Rooney's management team flatly denied July 12 that a meeting had taken place between chief executive Paul Stretford and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.

Perez was last night re-elected to the role by a massive majority and is understood to be keen on securing the services of the 18-year-old England striker.

But the Proactive Sports Group, who handle Rooney's affairs, insist Stretford and Perez have never met.

Instead more meetings are expected this week with Everton, who have offered Rooney a lucrative new five-year deal.

A spokesman for Proactive told the reporters, "Despite erroneous speculation, Paul Stretford has never in his life met Mr Perez."

Talks opened last Friday between Everton and the company to discuss the offer.

Dialogue is expected to continue this week and perhaps beyond with the club's chief executive Trevor Birch to work through all aspects of the proposal on the table.

The word is that Rooney could see his wages swell from 13,000 to 50,000 pounds a week.

Currently sidelined with a broken bone in his foot, he saw his stock rise in Euro 2004 in Portugal, where he scored four goals.

Real Madrid, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been touted as potential suitors for the teenage sensation, although as yet, none of them have made a formal bid.

Raised in the Croxteth area of Liverpool, Rooney's current deal still has two years left to run but Everton are anxious to secure his long-term future.

Manager David Moyes has already stated that he hopes the club's pre-emptive action will persuade the player to stick with the club he has supported all his life.

Rooney is currently taking a break and expected back at the end of next week.
