To mark the 2004 China Formula One Grand Prix, an exhibition opened Monday at the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre that demonstrates the technical innovation and the history of the Grand Prix.

The 2004 F1 China Grand Prix Exhibition, which will run through October 5, displays a collection of Formula One products including the equipment of famous drivers and Formula One car models and parts.

More than 3,000 visitors hit the first day of the exhibition and according to Yu Bin, an official from the centre, the visitor count is expected to top 40,000 to 50,000 one day soon.

A McLaren Formula One race car was also on show with two models posing and more racing cars and parts will arrive in the next few days, according to Yu.

Besides the products, the exhibition also provides an opportunity for spectators to learn and experience more about Formula One with multi-media technology.

Visitors can drive a small model car in the track designed after the Shanghai International Circuit, the host circuit of China Grand Prix to better know the track.

Race car video games are also available for visitors to experience for themselves the high speeds involved in Formula One racing.

"I have a real good time here but it is hard to control the car," said Christophe Malergue, a visitor from France who came to see the exhibition with his family.

"What makes the exhibition different is that we focus on the high technology, high quality and visitors can take part in the sport and have a realistic experience," said Yu.

"Formula One is a very new sport for most of Chinese people. It is necessary to teach them to know and enjoy the sport and its culture," said Liu Jianyou, director of the Marketing Department of the Shanghai International Circuit.

"A variety of events will later be carried out to promote the sport," said Liu.
