Bomb threat postpones Beijing trade fair
    (China Daily)
    Updated: 2004-09-20 08:40

Beijing police had to postpone a trade fair which was scheduled to open Sunday at the Workers' Stadium after police received an anonymous letter claiming that a bomb had been planted at the stadium.

The fair's organizing committee said it received the police warning in the early hours of Sunday.

By Sunday afternoon, the committee had not been told if the fair could be opened.

Police said they are still probing the case and refused to give any details.

The trade fair, focusing on sports clothing and goods, was scheduled to be held between September 19 and 28.

A pop concert was staged on Friday evening at the stadium which can host an audience of more than 70,000. And a basketball match for public welfare was held on Saturday evening at the Workers' Gymnasium nearby.

In another development, Beijing police announced on Friday that they had detained a man who allegedly made false bomb threats to a bank.

The press officer with the Beijing Public Security Bureau said the man had called the police three times since May telling them bombs had been planted at a bank in downtown Beijing.

The police later found that all the threats were false.

The man has confessed to calling the bank's president and placing a bomb threat as well as sending him two threatening letters.

Police said the man is the former husband of an employee of the bank and that he said he was unsatisfied with the bank's housing subsidies.
