       SPAIN

Real Madrid completed a week to forget when they lost 1-0 to Espanyol, missing a penalty and having two players sent off in the process.

Real, thumped 3-0 by Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League in midweek, lost to a 42nd-minute goal from Maxi Rodriguez as Ronaldo missed a penalty.

Coach Jose Antonio Camacho is set for a meeting about his future on Monday -- even though Real are only one point off the pace after three games.

Espanyol's victory gave the Barcelona-based club seven points from three games, along with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, who drew 1-1, Osasuna, Real Zaragoza and Valencia.

    ENGLAND

Champions Arsenal dropped their first points of the season after five successive wins when a late Henrik Pedersen equaliser earned Bolton Wanderers a 2-2 draw at Highbury.

Arsenal, who nonetheless extended their unbeaten record to 46 league matches, had twice led through Thierry Henry and Robert Pires, Radhi Jaidi getting Bolton's first equaliser.

Arsenal on 16 points remain two points clear, however, as Chelsea could only draw 0-0 at home with Tottenham Hotspur.

Everton, who missed relegation by one place last season, moved up to third on 13 with a 1-0 home win over Middlesbrough.

Two new managers got off to winning starts as Graeme Souness's Newcastle United won 2-1 at Southampton and Mark Hughes, Souness's replacement, saw Blackburn beat Portsmouth 1-0.

Manchester United host Liverpool on Monday.

    ITALY

Two games into the Serie A season and Juventus are the only team with a 100 percent record after they beat Atalanta 2-0 with two goals from David Trezeguet.

Vincenzo Montella went one better with a hat-trick but his AS Roma side still lost 4-3 at promoted Messina.

Roma led 3-2 before goals from Domenico Giampa' and Riccardo Zampagna gave the Sicilians, playing their first top-flight home game for 39 years, a memorable victory.

Late goals for Andriy Shevchenko and Kaka secured a 2-0 win for Champions AC Milan at Bologna while Lazio were held to a 1-1 draw against visiting Reggina.

    GERMANY

VfL Wolfsburg took over at the top of the Bundesliga with a 2-1 win at Hansa Rostock as VfB Stuttgart were held to a goalless draw by Hertha Berlin.

Wolfsburg won with goals by Diego Fernando Klimowicz and Pablo Thiam against a Hansa team who had Rene Rydlewicz sent off 10 minutes from time and saw Marcus Allbaek miss a penalty.

Hertha's draw was their fifth in a row and came after they had striker Nando Rafael sent off at the end of the first half.

Bayern Munich continue to struggle and needed late goals by Lucio and Roy Makaay to grab a 2-2 draw at Borussia Dortmund.

After five games Wolfsburg have 12 points, Stuttgart 11 and Werder Bremen nine after a 3-0 home win over Hanover 96. Bayern are sixth on eight points.

     FRANCE

Toulouse lost top spot when they went down 1-0 to Olympique Marseille, allowing three teams to climb above them.

Peguy Luyindula's goal at the Stade Velodrome gave Marseille the points and ended Toulouse's unbeaten start to the season.

Olympique Lyon and Bastia drew 0-0 to move a point above Toulouse on 12, along with AJ Auxerre, who beat 10-man Metz 4-0 to go top on goal difference.

Benjani Mwaruwari scored twice in the first 20 minutes and Bonaventure Kalou and Lionel Mathis completed a convincing win.
