HUANGSHAN: The Sixth China International Folk Art Festival, the largest ever to be held in the country, opened on Saturday with more than 400 professional and amateur artists from more than 20 countries flocking to the event.

The artists, from nations including China, Mexico, France, Germany, Britain. Japan and the Republic of Korea, sang, danced and paraded in Huangshan, a city known for its mountain views and a world cultural and natural heritage site in East China's Anhui Province.

The performances that coincide with the 55th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China will also be staged in areas surrounding Huangshan through October 7.

From October 8 to 11, 11 selected performances by foreign troupes will be shown in Beijing, and in North China's Shanxi Province the week after.

The festival is co-sponsored by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC) and the Huangshan municipal government.

Wang Jinshan, governor of Anhui Province, said at the opening ceremony that the festival will serve to exhibit the province's cultural features and scenic spots, and promote exchanges between local people and world people.

"The survival and development of folk arts need exchanges between artists of all countries," said Li Shuwen, vice-chairman of the CFLAC, "so that they can learn from each other and seek common development."

Sonia Amelio, a Mexican dancer known for playing castanets who has visited China six times, said she felt the "incredible" development of China every time she visits.
