Beijing Olympic venues on schedule, IOC told

Beijing Olympic organizers Thursday briefed a group of International Olympic Committee (IOC) officials on the progress of the city's preparations for the 2008 Games.

Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympics, told the IOC's 14-member Coordination Commission that President Hu Jintao last month instructed the Beijing municipal government to endeavor to make the 2008 Games a success.

"President Hu ordered us to learn from Athens' successful experience of hosting the 2004 Olympics and keep complete compliance with the timetable for our preparatory work," Liu said.

"It demonstrates the consistency of the central government's support and importance attached to the 2008 Games," he added.

In August, Beijing organizers sent a 100-plus delegation to Athens in a bid to get first-hand information of hosting the world's largest sporting event.

The three-day Coordination Commission meeting, which began on Wednesday, will be followed this weekend by a high-profile visit by IOC President Jacques Rogge.

Meanwhile, Britain's Olympic committee has agreed to exchange coaches and training expertise with its counterparts from China in preparation for the Beijing Games, British officials said Thursday.

"Agreements like this can only help to enhance the services which the (British Olympic Association) will be able to offer elite Olympic athletes before the Beijing Games," Chairman Craig Reedie was quoted as saying on the group's Website.

A pact signed in Beijing on Wednesday "provides for closer co-operation ... the sharing of information and experiences and could involve the exchange of coaches and experts prior to the Beijing Games," the statement said.
