FM: China pushes for six-party talks
    (Xinhua)
    Updated: 2004-11-02 22:48

China is pushing for the fourth round of six-party talks at the earliest date through diplomatic efforts, said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue in Beijing at a Tuesday press conference.

However, the spokeswoman said it was not clear whether the new round would be held at the end of November or December. China hoped it would be held "as soon as possible".

Under China's mediation, three rounds of six-party talks addressing the nuclear stalemate on the Korean Peninsula have been staged in Beijing since August, 2003. However, the fourth round supposed to be held in late September was postponed.

China stands for a nuclear-weapon free Korean Peninsula, maintaining the peninsula's peace and stability and solving the problem through dialogue, said the spokeswoman.

She stressed that all six parties, including China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the United States, the Republic of Korea, Russia and Japan, agree on continue peace talks within the frame of six-party talks.
