Everton beat Liverpool 1-0 Saturday on Lee Carsley's goal in the 68th minute to move into second place in the Premier League.

Carsley scored after Liverpool failed to clear a ball from the box. He connected with a bending drive that beat Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

"The team defended so well when they had to," Everton manager David Moyes said. "We didn't get many chances to celebrate victories last season, and we are enjoying the wins we get and the goals we score."

Everton has 36 points, with third-place Arsenal at 34. In the most anticipated game of the season, Arsenal plays Sunday at home against league-leading Chelsea, which has 39 points.

Liverpool was coming off a victory in which it rallied past Olympiakos 3-1 Wednesday to reach the Champions League final 16.

This was Everton's first win in a Merseyside Derby in 10 attempts and Everton's first at home against Liverpool since 1997.

Trailing the top three in England are Manchester United (30), Middlesbrough (29), Aston Villa (25) and Liverpool and Charlton (24).

Udinese stayed on pace to qualify for next season's Champions League with a 1-0 win against last-place Atalanta in the Italian league. Vincenzo Iaquinta scored in the ninth minute for his team-leading fifth goal.

Udinese remained in third place with 28 points. First-place Juventus (35 points) and second-place AC Milan (31) have games Sunday.

The top four finishers in Italy each season gain a chance to play in the Champions League. Qualifying for the Champions League would be a first for Udinese. The club finished third in 1997-98, the last season before Italy's berths for the prestigious European competition were boosted from two to four.

    ___

Bayern Munich will spend the winter break in first place in the Bundesliga after tying Stuttgart 2-2 behind an assist and goal by reserve Paolo Guerrero. Schalke gave up a late goal and tied last-place Freiburg 1-1, losing a chance to overtake Bayern.

Bayern trailed 2-0, but Guerrero headed down the ball in the 67th minute to Claudio Pizarro, who slammed home a volley. In the 88th, Guerrero tied the score with his fifth goal of the season.

Bayern and Schalke finished the first half of the season with 34 points, but Bayern has a better goal difference. Stuttgart is third at 31. The season resumes Jan. 21.

    ___

FC Barcelona opened a 12-point lead in the Spanish league after beating 17th-place Albacete 2-1 behind goals by Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez.

Barcelona started Ronaldinho, who had been in doubt because of an ankle injury, and goalkeeper Victor Valdes, who had been ill.

Barcelona has 38 points while Real Madrid is second with 26 and plays Sunday.

    ___

Lyon played to a 0-0 tie at Bordeaux, reducing its lead at the top of the French first division to three points over Lille. Lyon has 38 points after 18 games. Lille moved up to 35 points after a 2-1 home win over Nantes thanks to second-half goals from Geoffrey Dernis and striker Matt Moussilou.

    ___

AEK tied Xanthi 1-1 on a second-half goal by substitute Leonidas Kapantais. AEK, with five ties in 11 games, has 23 points and shares the lead in the Greek first division points with Olympiakos Piraeus, which plays Apollon at home Sunday. Defending champion Panathinaikos followed with 20 points in third place.
