The death toll from a head-on collision of a passenger and freight train near the northern Italian city of Bologna has risen to 14.

"I've learned from rescue teams at the site that they have pulled a corpse from the wreckage of the train," the head of the regional civil protection service, Demetrio Egidi, told journalists.

"Rescue teams are continuing to work and the toll is not definitive," he added Saturday.

The two trains collided Friday afternoon on a stretch of single track in heavy fog, leaving the forward cars of the passenger trains a jumble of torn metal.

Four or five passengers were reported gravely injured and more than 50 suffered less serious injuries, late on Friday.

Four separate probes are underway into the cause of the accident.

One theory under investigation is that the regional passenger train, heading from Verona to Bologna, failed to make a scheduled stop at the Bolognina-Crevalcore station to let the freight train pass.
