Atletico Madrid fined for racist chanting

Atletico Madrid have been fined 600 euros (420 pounds) by the Spanish Football Federation for racist chanting in Sunday's derby match against Real Madrid at the Calderon.

The Federation gave Atletico a minor punishment because they deemed that the club had done all it could to prevent the incidents by asking the fans to stop the abuse over the public address system.

Referee Alfonso Perez Burrull noted the racist behaviour in his report on the match.

"I asked the match delegate to make an announcement on the public address system to ask the fans to stop making monkey noises when certain players had the ball," he said. "As a result...the noises grew louder."

Real Madrid's Brazilian full back Roberto Carlos was singled out by the crowd for abuse during the game at the Calderon which Real won 3-0.

Last month Albacete were fined 600 euros when the same referee reported that Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o had been abused in a league match.

The fine was halved on appeal, but two of the fans who had been involved in the incidents were fined 6,000 euros and banned from stadiums for five months.

The Federation also decided to fine three Valladolid players 500 euros each for wearing shirts in support of team mate German Hornos, who was seriously injured in a car crash in Uruguay at the end of last month.

The Federation said that Roberto Losada, Aritz Aduriz and Oscar Sanchez had broken rules when they had revealed t-shirts displaying the words "Hornos we're waiting for you" after scoring the goals in their side's 3-0 victory over Ejido in the second division.

Valladolid said the punishment "was a brutal demonstration of insensibility" on the part of the Federation and they would be appealing against the decision.
